Bless Your Cotton Socks!
Look at him working/ Darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there/ What does he care
Hey guys!
British idioms are a funny thing. They definitely add to the flavor of the conversation, but they can be a source of consternation if you have no idea what they mean!
Thinking back to our first days in the NHS, we would find the strangest saying and terms of endearment. Like being called ‘duck’! They aren’t calling you a fowl, rather they are being affectionate! Another odd phrasing you may find is that when they say it’s time for ‘tea’, what they mean is dinner.
So when you have a chance, try and learn some new phrases and sayings. Your colleagues will be chuffed to bits when you’re able to pick up a few new bits and bobs though your family may think you’ve gone barmy if they can’t understand you!
Song of the Week
There are some songs out in the music sphere that leave you thinking and pondering as to what the lyrics mean. Procol Harum’s A Whiter Shade of Pale definitely tops that list, with a cool tune and nonsensical words that make for a compelling song.
TV Shows to Binge
Sitcoms are aplenty to choose from, but if you had to make a decision, starting with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a safe bet. Witty, exciting, topical, and most importantly, hilarious, this is a show you will want to continue on forever. So join the Gang as they try and keep their Irish pub afloat.
Quote of the Week
“There is something that has to be understood straightaway about the British. As soon as you open your mouth, your listener puts you into a social category.”
-Christopher Moore, How to Speak Brit
This book was a gift on our first arrival to the UK, and has proven to be worth its weight in gold. It is filled with funny commentary, sayings, and explanations of what people really mean when they speak a particular phrase.
