Understanding Specialty Training in the UK
I'm playing my role in history/ Looking to find my goal/ Taking in all this misery/ But giving it all my soul
Hey guys!
There seems to be a lot of confusion and misinformation related to the specialty training pathway for the UK. It may be because the UK doesn’t have one single road to follow- unlike other countries such as the United States. Because of this, many IMGs are filled with the wrong notion regarding what they have to do and how they have to enter residency in the UK.
Some common misconceptions?
You need to do the foundation years/FY2. NOPE. If you’ve already completed an acceptable pattern of internship, you don’t need to do UKFP/FY2 standalone. You have the option to apply for a standalone or a non-training job or even directly enter training if you are eligible.
You need to do a non-training job for some time before you can join the training. NOPE. As mentioned above, if you are otherwise eligible, your first job in the NHS can be a training job.
You have to enter a training job at some point in your career otherwise no one will hire you. NOPE. There are quite a few doctors (IMGs and local graduates) who choose to never enter training, and that is fine.
All training in the UK will take 8-10 years. NOPE. Each training pathway has a different duration and depending on the specialty as well as if you choose to do any sort of further specialization, the length of time can depend. GP training is the shortest path, at 3 years.
Specialty training in the UK comes at a cost. NOPE. There is NO FEE to apply for training or to train in the UK. Don’t confuse academic degrees with clinical training; they are different things.
Song of the Week
While it’s hard to pick just one song from Queen, a really good one that keeps you thinking as well as mesmerized by the lyrics is Made In Heaven.
TV Shows to Binge
Do you dig stories about the Vikings? A little violence, a little gore….and a little humor? Yup, you read that right- a little humor to add to the daily mix of life for a Norseman.
